Creating your first Component (Manual Creation) (NEW)

This article explains how to create a Component in Retraced, including required information, proper classification, and assigning unique identifiers for use in BOMs, certifications, and traceability workflows.

Updated this week

Before You Start

Remember components represent the individual building blocks of your products — such as fabrics, trims, packaging, semi-finished goods, or raw materials. Defining components correctly allows you to:

  • Build accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs)

  • Track material compositions

  • Link certificates at component level

Step 1: Navigate to My Components

  1. In the left navigation, go to ProductsMy Components tab

  2. Click + Add new

Step 2: Create Component

You will see the option to manually create a new component.

You must fill in the required fields:

1. Component Name – The internal or external name of the component

2. Component Level – High-level classification (e.g., Fabrics, Packaging, Raw Material)

3. Component Type – More specific category within the level

Style Level and Type Availability

The product types you can create depend on your company’s configured facility processes.

If a product type is not visible in the creation dropdown, it means it is not supported by your current process setup.

You can review your available product and component categories in the Product & Component Catalogue Overview →overview.

4. Add Component Codes (Select ID Type + Type ID Value): Each component must have at least one identifier. The ID type defines what kind of identifier you are using. IDs must be unique. Examples include ERP ID, PLM ID, Main Supplier ID, UPC (GTIN-12), etc. Adding multiple IDs helps standardize and recognize product identifiers across systems.

5. Once completed, click Create Component. This creates the component profile.

Missing a Component type?

If you cannot find the appropriate product level or type, please let us know by submitting a request via this form. Our team will review and update the taxonomy where applicable.

Step 3: Enrich the Component Profile

After creation, you’ll land on the component detail page.

You add or update additional information such as:

  • Description

  • Raw Material Composition (RMC)

  • Vendors and suppliers

  • Supply chain configuration

To Edit Overview information, click on the Edit Pencil icon button on the top right of your profile. Make sure to click Save your changes before leaving the page.

Next Steps

Once your component is created, you can:

  • Add it to a Product’s Bill of Materials (BOM):

Link this component to one or multiple product styles or variants.

  • Define Material Composition:

Specify percentages, nested materials, or country of origin details.

  • Link Certificates:

Attach scope or transaction certificates at the component level when relevant.

  • Add variants of SKUs for your component:

Define Color and Size variations for your component.

Remember: Variants and SKUs will inherit data from their parent level unless explicitly overridden.
