Creating your first component

Add the materials and parts you buy from your upstream suppliers, such as fabrics, trims or yarns, so you can use them in your orders.

Before you start

Components are the materials and parts that make up a product, for example fabrics, trims, yarns or raw materials. Every order needs a component: it’s the product being bought.

Where you create it depends on whose order it is:

  • Your own order (you buy from your upstream supplier): create the component in My Components, then select it when you place the order. Create it once and reuse it in all your orders.

  • An order you record on behalf of your upstream supplier (they buy from their own supplier): create the product directly in that order.

Option 1: Create a component for your own orders

  1. In the left navigation, go to Products → My Components and click Add component.

  2. Fill in the required fields:

    • Component name: the name you use for the component.

    • Component level: the main category, for example Fabrics, Yarns or Raw Material.

    • Component type: a more specific category within the level.

❕ Level and type can’t be changed after creation. If you choose the wrong one, create the component again.

    • Component codes: select an ID type and enter the ID. Each component needs at least one unique ID. You can add several.

  3. Click Create component.

    Missing a Component type?

If you cannot find the appropriate product level or type, please let us know by submitting a request via this form. Our team will review and update the taxonomy where applicable.

Option 2: Create a product inside an order

If your upstream supplier doesn’t use Retraced, you can record the order they placed with their own supplier. The product they bought usually isn’t in your component list, so create it inside the order:

  1. On the ‘Tracing’ tab, click + on your upstream supplier’s box and choose Add order. In the ‘Order Details’ step, click Select or create new style under Order products.

  2. Enter the required information: name, level, type and code.

  3. Click Create product. The product is added to the order straight away.

Before you add a product to an order

  • Only the main product can be added to an order, not its variants or SKUs.

  • Once a product is added to an order, it can’t be edited. Check the information carefully. If something is wrong, create a new product.

Created it in the wrong place?

If you created a style that should have been a component, or the other way round, you don’t need to create it again. Convert it instead:

  • Style → component: go to Products → My Styles, tick the styles and click Convert to components in the bar above the table.

  • Component → style: go to Products → My Components, tick the components and click Convert to styles in the bar above the table.

Next steps

  • Use it in your orders: select it as the product when you place an order with your upstream supplier → [Purchase Order: Place an order to your supplier]

  • No longer need a component? → [Archiving and unarchiving components]
